On a basic level painting is a decorative act; the application of paint to a surface for the purpose of enhancement. Paint is used to embellish and adorn; it serves to complete an object or idea. For me, much of modern painting has under-explored the significance of the inherent decorative nature of painting. In my paintings, I use decorative elements within the tenets of formal abstraction. I concentrate on working with vibrant color and geometric patterns. My working process starts with pencil drawings on graph paper. I choose a simple organizational structure and then play with the components, exploring how an alteration can create a dynamic image. Once I have captured an image, I make gouache and watercolor studies to develop the color of the painting. I work with a limited spectrum of color, expanding and redefining a single hue for each image. Color is the most intuitive aspect of my work. I think my art-making has always been driven by my desire to explore all aspects of seeing. When I am actively looking I am aware of the sensation of sight. Ultimately, I want my art to encourage the viewer to experience the full pleasure of looking. |
